Why spend your holidays in Oman ?
To begin with, this video from the Ministry of Tourism gives a good overview of the many options available in the Sultanate:
Spectacular and varying landscapes
Of course, Oman is the desert : the sea of ochre sand of the Wahiba, the fanciful undulations of the White Desert or the immense dunes of the Rub al Khali, soaring over the horizon of the endless plain of Jiddat al Harasis like as many sand mountains.
Oman is also the sea : its 3000 km plus of coastline, dotted with villages and fishing ports, from the Musandam “fjords” in the North down to the Dhofar cliffs deep in the South, its countless beaches of varying colours of the Gulf of Oman or the Indian Ocean. Oman is the mountains too. In the North, the Hajar Mountains, culminating at an altitude of 3000 m, a mineral landscape with jagged ridges, cut by deep valleys sheltering villages and their ancestral palm groves. It is in these mountains that, from time immemorial, water has been tapped and conveyed via the falaj system (canals) to irrigate the large palm groves of inland towns. In the South, the Dhofar Mountains, with their climate and flora all of their own, that plunge into the ocean on one side and vanish in the desert on the other. |
Last but not least, Oman is the wadis : these deep valleys and canyons where water, so scarce in other places, springs to form superb natural pools which are unquestionably invitations to bathe.
And not only are Omani landscapes quite varied, but their diversity can be discovered without lengthy car drives. Especially in the North, distances are short, and you may quite well bathe in a wadi in the middle of the mountains, between a night in the desert and another at the seaside !

Guaranteed change of scene
Oman is a developed country, but no doubt Western visitors feel quite far from home when they set foot in this country. Omanis have kept their Arab culture alive, from their dress code to their relaxed attitude or the music they listen to. Expatriates, mainly from South Asia and the Middle East, are numerous and they brought with them their culinary craft : there are plenty of Indian, Pakistani or Lebanese restaurants.
The vast majority of the population is Muslim and Islam permeates every day life. The non-Muslim traveller will have the chance to discover these customs, though they will not be constraints as, here, tolerance is prevalent.

The opportunity to live an adventure
Few people visit Oman and you will extremely rarely be standing in a flock of tourists. This, added to our thorough knowledge of the country, will make you feel like adventurers, off the beaten track, encountering only a few locals or being alone to enjoy the landscape, in full security.
This can be true when you travel by car, but you will appreciate it still further when you go by foot. The Sultanate is an ideal playing field for nature sport activities : hiking of course, but also canyoning, climbing or diving. As soon as you leave the road, you will feel like a pioneer…

A family-friendly destination
Given its high level of safety, good sanitary conditions and fun activities, Oman is an ideal destination for families.
Children will enjoy beaches, pools in the wadis and, maybe more than anything, the gigantic “sandpit” that the desert is ! They will marvel at seeing tropical fishes, wadi frogs, camels and mountain goats.
Local people, Omanis and expatriates alike, love children, whom they treat like princes.
Also worth knowing : you will find anything you need in supermarkets, especially in Muscat.

Comfort and beach : a memorable experience
Fancy relaxing holidays? A stay at the seaside? Like to be pampered?
So opt for one of the seaside resorts, around Muscat or Salalah, the southern capital, or even for one of the luxury hotels in Jebel Akhdar, at an altitude of 2000 m.
From there, we can propose you half or full day excursions, on self-drive basis or with a guide, to explore the area. A valuable compromise between farniente and discovery!
